# 2. How to Set Up a Parent Observer Canvas Account

Canvas is PASD's Learning Management System or LMS. It’s an organizational framework for students to interact with teachers and courses, all in one place. Students can login to Canvas and see all their course content. The Canvas Student app is also available for iOS and Android.

NOTE: Grades are still posted in Skyward.

Parents may sign up for a Canvas "Observer" account. Parents (Observers) can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course.

To sign up for a Parent Account from the website it is advised to have your child with you so you can create the pairing code together. It is also advised to have two browser tabs open at the same time so you can easily switch between the two.

1.  Have your child log into Office 365.  Once logged into Office 365, look for the Canvas tile listed in Apps. (Depending on your device, you may have to scroll to the bottom to find it.)

4.  You will need to provide your name, an email address as well as the "pairing code" your child provided you from their account in step 2.

Once you have established your account, parents can log directly into canvas using the button below.  This log in is for parents only.  Students log in through Office 365.

Become an Observer on Canvas

While all grades will be using Canvas, they will be using it in a slightly different manner.  K-1 teachers will be posting newsletters, resources and class happenings. Similarly, with grades 2 & 3, though they will be doing some career-based activities.  4th and 5th grade will be using it in a more similar fashion to the secondary level with the posting of some assignments to get students and parents acclimated to the learning system.  Secondary teachers will be posting all assignments to Canvas.  The principals will be clarifying this more in their building communications.

There is a clear expectation that all secondary teachers who are teachers of record for a subject area will be posting all assignments to their Canvas page

There is a clear expectation that all teachers should have their home pages and bios completed on Canvas as of Oct 1st.

Substitute teachers will not be accessing or utilizing Canvas in any way.

Special Education teachers may be manually added by the core subject area teacher (co-teaching)

Special area teachers (music/librarians) are being given broader access

High School Teachers building Blended/Online course offerings will receive additional specialized training on November 26th with a Canvas facilitator.

Administrators and teachers who are facilitating a PLC strand are expected to be utilizing Canvas

If a student notifies a teacher that they do not have internet access, librarians may be notified and a Kajeet may be loaned out

Only District approved programs that been vetted and are accessible through Canvas or internal programs through Clever (or soon to be added to Clever) may be used.

Any teacher desire to a course cross-listed with another course should contact Dr. Whitehead

Technical problems should first be referred to the Canvas help email [email protected], then to the building level super-user, then to Dr. Whitehead
