The Phoenixville Area Early Learning Center represents our strong commitment to early childhood education. The district provides a comprehensive full day Kindergarten program and a nurturing environment to ensure a successful start for our youngest students. Our goal is to foster the growth of all students academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. Our full-day program provides a wide variety of learning experiences for all students.

A Day in the Life of a PASD Kindergartener:

English Language Arts: The components of our balanced literacy program include Writing Workshop , Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Language Experience Approach (LEA), Fundations®, and Literacy Intervention/Enrichment (RtII) — which promote integrated and rigorous instruction.

Mathematics: Math in Focus (sometimes known as Singapore Math) is implemented K-6. Students concentrate on problem solving and learn to understand the “how” and “why” of mathematical concepts in order to develop strong mathematical thinking skills. Instruction incorporates concrete (e.g., manipulatives), pictorial (e.g., graphs), and abstract (e.g., numerals) pedagogy to achieve mastery in skills.

Science: Students explore science themes using the integration of reading and hands-on activities with the following topics: Materials and Motion, Trees and Weather, and Animals.

Social Studies: Social Studies themes are explored using the integration of literacy and other activities with the following topics: Communities, Celebrations Across Cultures, and Geography & Me. 

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS): Students are supported using a research-based framework that implements behavioral support strategies through modeling and practice, guided by data-based decision-making.

Technology: Students are introduced to the use of computers as a tool for learning and communication, using software that complements curriculum and provides practice of concepts/skills in subject areas.

Recess and Gross Motor Play: Students engage in socialization, physical activities, teamwork recess play.

Mindfulness: nurtures inner peace, enhances self-confidence, and facilitates more meaningful relationships.

Play-based Learning: provides opportunities to enrich learning through play, during which Kindergarteners seek to explore their social worlds, while actively engaging with people, objects, and representations. Play-based learning encourages language skills; supports literacy skills; develops social and emotional skills; and fosters creativity and imagination.

PAELC Specials


Kindergarten Special Area Classes (six-day rotation)

• Innovation and Exploration: focuses on digital citizenship in the first marking period. Students learn how to interact with the digital world objectively and safely. STEM is introduced in the second marking period and focuses on the 4Cs (i.e., creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking) through interacting with real-world problems. Lastly, students focus on developing proper skills to interact with library resources and media.

• Social Skills, Mindfulness, and Yoga: In the first semester, students learn social skills. In the second semester, students learn about Mindfulness as a calming technique and how to incorporate it with Yoga in the classroom.

• Theatre & Dance: Students work on skills such as spatial awareness, active listening, expressing emotions, and expanding their imagination.

• Music & Movement: Students sing and dance while learning about instruments and exploring tempo.

• Kindergarten Art: Students explore the nature of art and express themselves using a variety of techniques and materials. 

• Nutrition, Health & Wellness: Students learn how to make healthy choices at school and at home. They explore activities that promote wellness and learn good hygiene habits.
